Screen printing…
I have screen printed for many years and was luckily enough to be taught the process by a number of excellent printermakers who each approached the practice in different ways meaning that I have a host of exciting skills at my disposal. I enjoy mixing techniques - principally mono-printing with a screen and using photo stencils. Mono-printing with a screen entails painting directly onto the mesh to create your image and then ‘pulling’ a print which transfers the painting onto the paper - this results in a satisfyingly image with the characteristic flat, generous colour application of screen printing whilst simultaneously capturing brushstrokes and merging colours. Photo stencils are stencils that are created on the mesh using a light sensitive process - you can use acetates of photographs or paintngs/drawings or you can use objects in the same way as you would a photogram…as such the possibilities of image creation are endless! I also use screen printing to add pattern and colour to work in other media - it forms an important part of my cyanotype work where the photo sensitive screen emulsion echoes the light sensitive cyanotype process and therefore produces symbiotic images I can overlay.
I have spent much time in my teaching career passing on these screen printing skills and pride myself in demystifying the art, keeping it low tech/affordable and setting up working practices that lend themselves to the kitchen table!
